The town of Clayton is proud and rich in history. In 1832, Delaware’s first railroad went into operation. By the fall of 1855, the line passed through Clayton – then known as Smyrna Station. In 1860, the town’s name was changed to Clayton in honor of John M. Clayton, a former United States Secretary of State from Delaware and strong advocate for the railroad. In 1887, the town of Clayton was established along with its’ first school; Clayton Public School.
In August of 2012, some 185 years after the opening of the first school, the residents will welcome Clayton Intermediate School to the town. Located on Underwood Corner Road, Clayton Intermediate School provides a quality education for grades 5 & 6.
At Clayton Intermediate School each member of our staff is committed to providing all children with a rewarding educational experience. We will strive to provide a safe, friendly, well-structured learning environment where students are aware of the purpose and value of an education.
In our short existence, CIS has made a huge impact with students and earned a positive reputation around the state of Delaware. The CIS Student Council was recognized four times as the best Student Council in the State. One of our CIS student council members also held a prestigious office of President for the State of Delaware Student Council. We have been recognized annually as a Superior School within the Smyrna School District. CIS was the recipient of the Superstars in Education winner and was recognized by the Delaware Department of Education in 2018 for Exceeding Expectations.
The CIS daily instruction is enhanced and strengthened by weaving the Smyrna School District’s Community Core Values of respect, responsibility, perseverance, integrity and compassion in everything we do. Therefore, in addition to providing a traditional academic experience, we will strive to teach our students how to live ethical and moral lives.
At Clayton Intermediate School we recognize our parents’ value and their impact upon the learning process. We encourage your active participation in your child’s schooling experience. The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is a great way to impact your child’s education while helping Clayton Intermediate School provide the best education possible
In closing, it is an honor to serve the Clayton community and your family. We look forward to contributing to the rich history in Clayton. We are very excited to be on this journey together and anticipate that your child’s experience will be filled with joy and an abundance of learning.
